This on page SEO checklist is designed to help you gain an understanding of the core areas that need to be optimised in order to rank well on search engines. Search Engine Optimisation can be broken down into two main types, the first is on-page SEO and the latter is off-page SEO.
Off page SEO refers to the link building aspect of your website. Google wants to make sure that the top result for any query will provide the search user with the answer they are looking for. When highly reputable websites link back to your website, this tells the Search Engine that your website could be of high use to search users. On Page SEO checklist
When it comes to on-page SEO, you have a lot of control in terms of modifying your website to meet the requirements of a fully search engine optimised website. This on page SEO checklist covers basic to intermediate level SEO factors that you need to have optimised on every page and post of your website. By ensuring that every post and page meets the on page SEO checklist this will make it easier for the search engine bots to index your page content. SEO Content Quality and Quantity
When creating any effective SEO content, you need to ensure the content is of high quality, relevant and original. The pages and posts need to be at least 500 words in length. It is more effective to produce a low number of high quality posts that are informative and interesting rather than creating many poorly written and generic blog posts.
SEO Keyword Density and Placement
Your keyword or key phrase should be repeated throughout your text. Depending on the word count of your page, you may want to target using the keyword or key phrase 3-10 times. Avoid over stuffing your pages with your keyword as you can be penalised by the search engines for spamming. You should also add your keyword in the page URL.
SEO Title Tags
The SEO keyword needs to be present in the page headline (H1) and at least one sub heading (H2) of your page. This also includes your web pages meta title.
Meta Title and Meta Description Data
It is important to edit your meta description as your meta description is what displays on search results. If you rank highly on the search result and have compelling meta data, this could earn you that click versus other search results. Make sure to check the grammar and ensure your keyword is present in the title and description.
Optimise your Images
Images play an important part in posts and pages. Search engines index the images used on each page. You should place your keyword or key phrase in the image title, alt text and caption.
Internal and External links
Internal links help to establish your website architecture. An internal link is a link to another page via the same domain. Whereas an external link is a link that goes beyond the current website. We suggest adding 3 internal links on your pages. Common examples include the home page, contact page or a link to one of your products/services.
Fast and Responsive Pages
As mentioned earlier, search engines want their users to find the answers to their questions quickly. If your web page takes more than 3 seconds to load, you need to contact a developer. Website speed and mobile responsiveness is crucial. Google will penalise websites that take too long to load. Even if you rank well, studies show that a user will leave a website if it takes more than 3 seconds to load.
Grammar and Readability
This is commonly overlooked but it is important to create copy that is error free and is easily readable. If a user finds your page to be difficult to read, they will leave the page and you will have lost the potential enquiry/sale. Ideally you want to have clear sentences and short paragraphs. Make it easy for readers to find the answers they are looking for. For WordPress users, we highly recommend using the Yoast SEO plugin to check your work.
