Technical SEO Best Practices: How to Optimise Your Website

July 26, 2017 by Kent

This Guide is designed to teach you about technical SEO best practices that you need to implement onto your website. Technical SEO is focused on making your website easily crawl-able for search engine spiders/bots. SEO is comprised of on-page, off-page and technical SEO. All three areas need to be addressed in order to allow your website to rank well. Check out our technical SEO best practices guide to learn more.

Technical SEO Best Practices

Audit Internal links

Internal linking helps with ranking your pages more efficiently. From an SEO perspective, having internal links within your website pages and blog posts help navigate website crawlers throughout your website. From a user perspective, internal links also help users navigate your website. You also want to make sure that links are up to date and none of the URL’s are broken.

Review Your Sitemap

A sitemap is crucial for every website. Sitemaps let the search engine know about your website structure and allows them to scan and crawl your website faster. Here are some tips for your sitemap.

  1. Make sure your sitemap is up to date.
  2. Check your sitemap for any errors by using tools such as Google Search Console.
  3. Be aware of the size of your sitemap. Keep your sitemap focused on the core pages that you would like to be ranked.

Test and Improve Website Performance

Your business website needs to perform well and load fast. Research shows that website visitors leave a website if it takes longer than 3 seconds to load a web page. Ideally, you want your website to load within 1-3 seconds. We use tools such as GTmetrix.com to measure website performance. If your website isn’t loading quickly, get in touch with our team today.

Mobile Responsiveness is key

For technical SEO best practices, your website also needs to be mobile friendly. Websites need to be responsive so that visitors can easily use and view your website content on any device that they use. Websites that are not mobile friendly rank poorly on search engines.
