WordPress SEO Fundamentals Guide – What is on-page SEO?

April 13, 2017 by Kent

WordPress SEO made easy with our fundamentals guide. WordPress is well known for its compatibility with SEO. For those unaware, search engine optimisation (otherwise know as SEO) makes it easy for people who are looking for you, to find you. If you are a business operating in Auckland, you want your website to appear first on the Google search results of people who are searching for your products and services. Businesses which land that top position on a Google search result gain more website visitors compared to websites who appear lower.

Let’s start with On-Page WordPress SEO

For this WordPress SEO Guide we’ll start with on-page SEO. On-page SEO is about optimising the individual web pages or posts on your website. On-page is focused on optimising your content and HTML source code. WordPress makes it easy to implement on-page SEO practices. We recommend using the Yoast SEO plugin for the best results for your WordPress website.

Best Practices and Examples of on-page SEO

Below are some of the most common on-page SEO practices that everyone should implement for the website pages and posts.

Optimise Title Tags (H1)

Your web page/post title plays a large role in SEO ranking factors. Try and input your SEO keyword at the start of your titles to ensure the best results. (Read our guide on keyword research to learn more).

SEO Keyword Placement at the top of the page

We highly recommend placing your keyword/topic phrase at the start of your first paragraph. There’s a term called “above the fold” where Google places a large emphasis on the content which appears on a users screen once they land on your website for the first time. Google wants its users to find the answers to their questions very quickly.

Keyword Density within the Body Text

Your keyword/topic phrase should also appear throughout your content. For WordPress SEO pages, we advise a keyword density of no more than 2.5% of the entire word count.

SEO Keyword Placement in your URL

Your keyword/topic phrase needs to also appear in the slug/url of your webpage. It is best practice to keep the website URL clean and easy to read.

SEO Keywords in your images

Believe it or not but Google can also read the images within your web pages. Therefore it is important to place your keyword in the title and alt text of your images. The Yoast SEO tools makes it easy to do as there is no coding required at all.

The other side of SEO: Off-page SEO

Both on-page and off-page SEO practices need to be implemented in order to achieve the best results. Off-page SEO refers to back-linking and social media signals. To put it simply, Google wants to determine whether your website is both trustworthy and legitimate. If you have people sharing your content through social media and you also have other reputable websites sharing your content then Google takes that as an indicator that your website is both trustworthy and legitimate.

Having another website “refer” your content will go a long way to making Google believe your website is a highly reputable source. Google’s main focus is to have its users discover the information they need quickly and efficiently. Overall, it is very important to have both on and off page SEO working together to deliver the best results.
